What are the best SEO tools online in 2019?
SEO tools are software or plugins that help you to assess how your website interacts, with web crawlers, website visitors and other competing sites. They offer you plenty of analysis and optimization suggestions to help you actively improve your ranking. At the beginning this can be quite overwhelming, because of the sheer mass of information displayed, so be sure to get ready for analysis paralysis when you first use one of the not so beginner friendly tools.
Today I’ll give you a quick overview of the different types of SEO tools, furthermore we are going to go over the usability of each tool and for which target group it is suitable. It doesn’t matter whether you are a beginner or already a marketing professional, I have something in store for you!
Be sure that you really NEED an SEO tool if…
You want to know what your competitors are doing – keyword “competition analysis”. For which keywords, do they rank and how much traction do their sites get because of them? What are they doing better or worse than you? How can you overtake them in the SERPS?
You want to know how potential customers perceive your site – how old are they? Are there more male or female users? How effective is your metadata in converting? There are tools that check your metadata, and there are tools that allow you to set your metadata for each page, even though it is not mandatory to use a tool to set your site’s meta-data.
What are your potential customers looking for on google, are they using buying terms or are they just looking for information?
SEO tools online for Beginners
Where do my customers come from? How often is my website viewed? Are there more men or women visiting my suite, what are the differences in the retention time? Do my visitors use smartphones, tablets or desktop PCs?
All these things can be analyzed and grouped up into pretty columns with most SEO analysis tools. Remember Information is power and the more you know about your customers, the more you can influence them to do the things that you want!
The tool I am going to present you know is free of competition in its field and you should already be using it, if not, it is time to act, NOW!
With Google Analytics you can also see how long your visitors stay on a product page, read a text and when they jump off. This makes it clear whether you should work on certain parts of your website to increase the time your visitors spend there because the retention time is a critical measurement for Google and, of course, for you. Because quality content=retention time=quality customers=money
HOW ARE YOU PERCEIVED ON GOOGLE?
Potential website visitors see your page first in the Google results, the so-called SERPs. Google lists the title of your webpage and its meta description, that’s why it is crucial to have a good and converting meta description, because it is often the difference between having a new visitor or not. Therefore, if you aren’t good with words, you can start brainstorming and practicing, it is only a small paragraph, but it is very mighty. Both the title and meta-description are easiest to check, view and configure with the SERP-Snippet Generator, it shows you how other users see a search hit regarding your website.
The color indicates whether your description or title is too long or too short. Although some titles and descriptions are displayed in the desktop view, they are abbreviated on tablets or smartphones. Therefore, this measurement is often deceptive. Be sure to choose a short enough meta description, so that mobile users can to get a quick overview of what your site is about. The Serp-Snippet Generator checks the output in all formats. If he shows an orange or red stripe underneath the result, the title or the description will probably not be displayed completely. If the stripe is blue, everything is fine.
This is how it must look. Everything is in the blue area, the title is crisp and informative, the meta description will be displayed on desktop and smartphone in full length.
On-Page Analysis SEO tools online
On-Page Analysis SEO tools online help you find bugs or sub-optimized parts on your website that make it easier for your site to outrank other sites because Google prefers well-structured sites, which are On-Page optimized.
The free starter tool from Sistrix…
You need to sign up and then you can have your domain checked for possible on-page optimization errors. The tool will show you if:
1) You are missing headlines.
2) Content is duplicated on your site
3) Missing Metadata
4) Broken Links
Sistrix Smart is highly recommended if you are looking to get your feet wet in the SEO world.
If the before mentioned points, do not make sense for you, especially the part with the headlines, I strongly recommend you reading our other article regarding on-page optimization.
In conclusion, it is possible to say, that Sistrix-Smart is a good free tool if you are just starting out on your internet marketing journey.
Therefore, I highly recommend it!
Optimize the loading time of your site
Your page should build up quickly and load all the elements in an appropriate manner of time, yes I am also talking about Multi-Media files, like pictures and videos – Furthermore I am sure you know how annoying it is when you are visiting a new site and it takes an eternity to load even the smallest text snippets. The SEO tool PageSpeed shows you what you need to improve your website to load optimally – especially in times of mobile internet use it is extremely important regarding user experience, that you have a lightweight page. Your pictures and videos should be compressed – so that not only the content but also the underlying multimedia files are ready to use.
Google has developed its own Pagespeed tool: it gives a score from 0 to 100 and gives suggestions for how to optimize your load time.
The PageSpeed tool has a great advantage, it is available via a browser plugin, which lets you check every site without a hassle.
Also recommended: Pingdom (blazing fast and has a little more detail than Google’s PageSpeed tool)
Most all-rounder tools like SEMrush or Sistrix all have built-in keyword tools. But it’s always good to work with different tools to check every probability and get the most out of your website.
Karma Keyword Tool
helps you decide how to name your Website or subpages. It shows quickly and without a clunky interface how often a search term is searched per month, how much money you would have to pay to advertise with that term and how competitive the keyword is.
Advantage: Exact data without registration and costs.
Disadvantage: Only one keyword is displayed per request and the data will not be saved when you refresh the site.
SEMrush’s Keyword Tool
The keyword query from SEMrush gives you a little more overview. The tool also lists alternatives and at the same time spits out all relevant search data.
Disadvantage: only 10 queries per day in the free version. A subscription is only worth its money when you use their search tool very extensively or are planning to use it as an all-around tool. But more on that later.
Google Keyword Planner
With Google’s own tool you get, of course, the most accurate and updated data. But this comes at a cost. The exact data will only be displayed if you are running a campaign with Google AdWords and for most people, this isn’t sustainable as these campaigns can devour huge sums of money, so if you plan on running campaigns be sure to do your homework.
Advantage: Exact data
Disadvantage: Only if you use AdWords too
My SEO tool online also offers keyword research where you can search for monthly volume and how hard it is to rank against the competition. There is a 7 day-trial where you can use it as much as you want and it includes a paid version as well.
If you want to check your content for SEO proficiency, it is best to use the following free tools.
The Siteliner tool shows you duplicate content on your page and content that is very similar. Google recognizes duplicate content and penalizes your page accordingly. In addition, Siteliner checks all your links and shows which of them are broken and empty. In my point of view, one of the most useful tools out there, as it is free and doesn’t require a registration.
You run your blog with a kind of success, but after writing 100, 10,000 words articles about how to brew the perfect cup of tea you ran out of ideas? No problem, I got you! AnswerThePublic feeds you with enough ideas on a variety of topics. Just enter a topic in which you are interested in and the tool spits you out the most common search term combinations.
Disadvantage: Although you get the information that some search terms are commonly used, you do not get any exact numbers so be sure to use this tool in combination with other tools. In my opinion, this tool is just for brainstorming and getting a grasp on new trends.
SEMrush is a professional tool, but also available in a limited beginner version. As a free user, you get 10 free searches per day, which can be circumvented by using proxies and the use of the incognito browser mode.
The Best SEO tools online for pro’s and those who want to step their game up
Google Search Console
Google Search Console is a webmaster service. It shows you the indexing status of your page (whether the page is officially registered or not) as well as its visibility on the SERPS. The best thing about this, you get it all for free. Until a few years ago, the Search Console was known as “Google Webmaster Tools.” Important elements such as the sitemap or the Robots.txt can be viewed with the Google Webmaster Tools, while the SEO Tool also shows how your own pages look like from the perspective of Google’s algorithms and crawlers. The tool offers a lot of statistics, like internal and external links, your backlink profile and several other measurements, which are very useful if you want to get serious about ranking. We already mentioned SEMrush as a free tool above. It also offers a complete package and is an SEO all-rounder: Keyword Research, Rank Tracking, Backlink Analysis, Content Optimization, Pagespeed and much more. Individual aspects are implemented a bit better here and there by other tools (e.g. error analysis of links), but for a complete package, SEMrush is the first choice for me, as an SEO professional. You can also monitor what your competition is doing with SEMrush: which keywords do they rank for? How does their page rank in comparison to yours? This will give you important hints on how to stay competitive. Furthermore, it spits out suggestions for keywords in your field of expertise, for which your competitors do not rank for. This could be an opportunity to get ahead of your competition!
We also like to work with the optimizer from Sistrix. The Sistrix toolbox offers several SEO tools that cover the entire optimization spectrum. The downside? Well, every tool cost you approximately 120$. Therefore, I like to combine SEMrush with the very accurate Sistrix Optimizer. The optimizer shows reliably and exactly where you must rework on our pages. Dysfunctional links, missing headings, duplicate content, undefined metadata. A separate crawler checks at the touch of a button, if all changes are fixed. This is an option which none of the other tools can boast, a dream for every SEO-specialist out there.
In this post, I gave you an overview of what SEO tools online are, how they work and which tools suit your needs. Of course, this is a very controversial topic, every expert has his own recommendations and personal go-to. There are other all-rounder tools, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages e.g Xovi, Ahrefs or Metrics tools. It’s just up to you to decide if you like one tool better than the other.
